Research

Areas of specialization
  • Conservation biology and behavioral ecology
  • Population ecology
  • Spatial ecology

Current main projects (starting date)

Small populations and species persistence (2001)

  • Examining the contribution of small populations for species persistence using the reed bunting (Emberiza schoeniclus) as a model organism, spatial population structure and source-sink dynamics
  • Occurrence and stability of song dialects in the reed bunting

Natal dispersal behavior in red-cockaded woodpeckers (Picoides borealis) (2000)

  • Empirical and simulation study to evaluate the interaction among dispersal behavior, landscape configuration and risk of inbreeding
  • Demographic connectivity of two small populations and consequences of habitat gaps within populations for dispersal movements and subsequent breeder survival (in collaboration with Prof. J.R. Walters, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, USA)

Spatial population structure of the middle spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos medius) (2002)

  • Importance of size, isolation and habitat quality of oak woods for the dynamics and persistence of the middle spotted woodpecker (meta-)population in the Canton Zurich

Population ecology of the red-backed shrike (Lanius collurio) (2003)

  • Scaling down the source-sink concept to the territory level to examine within-population dynamics
  • Causes and consequences of philopatry and breeding dispersal
  • Factors influencing population dynamics (all projects with researchers of the Swiss Ornithological Institute, Sempach
